As one of our 'Personal and Professional Practice' tasks we have to prepare a presentation.
It could be anything, game review, film review. We could talk about the game companies we like or specific artists of whichever kind we want.
We are to present this to our fellow students, as a formal presentation.
I considered doing a game review like any other.
But I have decided that what inspires me the most isn't actually other people's work, not visual work anyway.
What inspires me the most and what has developed my imagination into what it is are books.
I was reading all sorts of books since I can remember and I still know people who wouldn't look at a book twice if someone was offering it.
I always keep trying to persuade people to read one good book, and if they didn't enjoy the experience I'll stop bugging them. It never fails. It's like a drug, once you sniff it, you're in it for life.
But since this presentation has to be relevant. I have decided to get a list of games and obviously movies that have been inspired by books. I didn't bother with movies too much, because most of them ARE based on books. Not so much with games. But some great games are indeed based on books.
During my research I found lots and lots of games, even the ones I play, are based on books. Some of the information wasn't obtained through facts but people playing the game, and realizing that the story seemed familiar... and sharing with everyone that it is in fact too similar to one of the books they've read.
I took this information into count because if one's story is very similar to another's the influence on one another is obvious.
So this are only a few I came across:
Assassins Creed, The Witcher, Alan Wake, BioShock, Alone In The Dark, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth, Fallout: New Vegas, Dracula: Origin, Metro 2033, Alice, Sherlock Holmes, S.T.A.L.K.E..R., Blade Runner, Dante's Inferno, Amnesia: dark descent, Halo.
And obviously needless to say, games and movies like Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings.
Inspired by writers like:
H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyla, Bram Stoker, Lewis Caroll, Ayn Rand, Vladimir Bartol, Andrzej Sapkowski, Larry Niven.
I personally think that apart from good gameplay, graphics, music and sound, a great storyline is really important in a game. Infact, in a lot of situations people, like me, are willing to give up on good graphics... as long as the story is great. For example I still come back and play Diablo II or Age of Empires II... two of the greatest games on the planet : D
I think a reason why some people decide not to have a story in a game is because of people like this:
"Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important." - John Carmack (game programmer for games like Doom, Quake and Rage )
I'm not sure if I'll even waste my time commenting on this...
The basic point of this presentation is to show people how many things are influenced by books and how successful they are because of it, because people love it. And encourage people to start reading : D Maybe I can throw in a list of awesome books that they could start off with c:
