Own Crates And Barrels

So here is my Industrial Barrel. Pretty straight forward. I wrapped it in a metal texture, then added a bit of rust around the edges and the extrusions. I had no problems modelling, uv mapping or texturing it so here you have a final piece.

This is the process of my old fashioned barrel.
This is the original texture I started off with. Just a wooden texture, and I added a bit of leaking and moss at the top and bottom.
But it still looked a bit naked...

Then I realized it just needed the metal and the nails to hold it together.
And so here is my finished Barrels.

Own crates.

When it came to making my own crates... It took a bit of a process, cause every time I modeled one, I didn't like something about it... and started from scratch.
Here are some of the ones I didn't like:
This one just seemed too simple, not modern enough D:

This one I thought of when I started thinking less about the looks of it, and more about what the actual crates and barrels are designed to do. Which is a shipment and protection of the cargo.
But this one seemed a bit weird... I didn't like it. So I deleted it.

But right after that I came up with a perfect design. I like it anyway.

Well at first I had the edges of the crate extruded a bit further away.
But I wasn't quite happy with it yet.
So I extruded it inwards. That way the cargo is inside held on the tips of the extrusion basically.
At this point I was happy with the look of it, as well as the overall design to protect the stuff inside.

Here is a screenshot of it after I've textured it.

The old fashioned crate I did first. So it's not as good as I would want it to be but I figured I needed to learn my lesson somehow.
What I figured happened is after I UV mapped it and imported it into Photoshop I must have missed the lines or something, cause on one of the sides the texture actually comes onto the other face too much D: they don't meet up nicely in the corner like they should... Here you can see for yourself.
But I only just realized this happened, and I don't really want to clean it up at this point. The stuff I did afterwards don't have this problem, it was just a one off thing so I don't think it's something I need to worry about.

Barrels And Crates Research

Over the Easter holidays we were supposed to create crates and barrels, old fashioned, and modern or industrial types. So here are a few barrels and crates I looked at for inspiraton.

Whisky barrel
Pretty straight forward, wooden barrel with metal edges to hold it together. Pretty much my favourite type of barrel : D I love the look of it.

I have noticed that the more imperfect the wooden stuff is... the better : D
I love the rusty metal and the scratched and damaged barrel.

Skyrim barrel

Using the rusty and damaged look. I like the texture but I don't like the shape of the barrel : s
It's not round enough for me.

Oblivion barrels

These are also very damaged stained old barrels, but with little handles on the top lid. I believe it's because they're for food transport rather than liquids. I can't think of any other reason for

Borderlands Barrels
Pretty modern, industrial type.
Rusty and stained. Reason for different colours is basically to let you know what's inside, and what's going to happen to the enemy when you shoot the barrel, and the explosion of whatever is inside hits them.

Oil barrels

Oblivion crates

More Borderlands - crates
sort of modern looking weapon and ammo crates.

And an old fashioned wooden crate.
What makes them modern is the fact they're made out of metal obviously, and the screens and buttons and all : D They're more like a safe than a crate. But that's the magic of modern things, they consider all the possibilities and try and eliminate the risks of all sorts.

Here I have a barrel I found when I was walking past some factory.

I like all the rust and scratches on it, you look at it and you see that this barrel has been through a lot! D:

And here I have some barrels I photographed in the 'modern war' section in the local museum - Royal Armouries ( greatest museum on the planet by the way)

I like the dirty textures on those. I mean it's pretty obvious that you won't see a clean barrel or crate anyway.

And so here you have all the barrels and crates I've looked at before I created my own : D
