Since a lot of people never used maya before, our tutor made a few exercises he wanted us to complete in order to teach us what does what etc.
It's all the things you'll need to use at some point when making your own animation, things like objects speeding up and slowing down rather than running constantly at the same speed, bouncing with squash and stretch rather than things not changing their shape at all etc. I personally found those really useful and I'll surely use this knowledge well in my own work!

UV textures and deformers:
I created a cube, divided it so it looks like a rubiks cube.
Then created the texture in Photoshop.
Uploaded it back into Maya, and onto my Rubiks cube.
I also used the Twist deformer to make it look like it's walking, I created a short animation to present this. And here are two screen shots from it.
