I thought I'll take a second to explain how the tsunamis are actually created.
It's caused by things like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, underwater explosions, glacier calvings, tectonic movements etc. All sorts of things that cause a large displacement of water have potential to cause a tsunami.
They usually consist of a series of waves with the time between them ranging from minutes to hours.
The impact of this disaster is limited only to coasts but it's still one of the deadliest natural disasters.
With today's technology we can predict where and what will be hit, usually what strength it will be and what height it will be by the time it gets somewhere... this helps people, gives them a bit of notice to run away somewhere high and overall further into the land.
But if you happen to be on the beach, and you see a huge drawback ( the water recede from the beach) you run, run for your life! :')
Tsunamis are actually really difficult to notice when in deep sea as they're only about a meter tall. What's quite awesome though is the fact that they travel at around 970kph which is as fast as a jet flies, which means it can travel through an entire ocean within hours.
It obviously slows down when it hits the coast but then it causes it to grow in height. It's still very strong when it hits though and we can watch videos of whole houses being taken down, and look at photographs but we will never be able to imagine how strong it actually is... and it's one of those things I don't wanna find out.
